Try to Remember the Kind of September...
On my walk to work this morning in our nation's capital, I noticed with no little amount of surprise that most of the flags I saw were flying high at full staff.
On my way home from work this evening, I noticed with no little amount of bemusement that many of those same flags had been lowered to half staff.
Never forget!

The flags are for Effi Barry.
I was quite honestly distressed when I heard of her passing. I sure did like her.

Mayor Fenty Mourns the Passing of Former First Lady Effi Barry
Mayor Adrian M. Fenty issued the following statement after the passing of the former first lady of the District of Columbia Effi Barry:
"My wife Michelle and I, along with all the residents of the District of Columbia, are deeply saddened by the loss of former first lady Effi Barry. She was a truly great woman who devoted her life to public service for this city, and who was beloved by its people. She will be remembered for her work on public health issues for our residents and as an incredible example of poise and grace.
To honor her memory, and in conjunction with the wishes of our former mayor, Councilmember Marion Barry, I have asked that District of Columbia flags be flown at half-staff beginning today and ending on the day of her funeral. My sincere condolences are extended to her family and friends."
Wow, I hadn't even heard she died. That's a DC institution gone.
But I don't think that explains why the flags were lowered in the middle of the day.
Yeah, you're probably right. Still, I like to think they're for her.
