This Isn't Gonna Do Much For Satellite Radio

Via stereogum, the worst indie list ever.

Although Love Will Tear Us Apart would be a great wedding song, an anthem? Huh.

All I could think when I was reading this was wait, really? Maybe they're launching an Onion for yindies.

Would be much more interested in seeing your list, dbh... Don't tell Sparky that I said I secretly was blwn away a bit by the rock, rhythm, and blues mixes. Call me easily excited; I'm sure you've done it before!

This list is absurd. Half the songs on there aren't even all that anthemic, and some of them are just plain ballads. Even from NME, I expected more...

i was just pontificating at sparky some of the songs i'd consider to be pump-the-fist-in-the-air anthems - teenage riot - sonic youth, let down or national anthem - radiohead, caribou - pixies, to hell with poverty - gang of four, chicago - sufjan stevens . . . it wouldn't be hard to make a list that does better than this one.

Sparky said you didn't like Au Revoir Simone. I'm surprised.

Did Sparklesocks also mention the part where he put it on at 11:45 p.m. when I was settled into bed, reading the denouement of my book? I'll defs give it another shot, but coupled with a the drama of a guy about to go to prison for faking his own kidnapping, it was just noisy. And the sunshine tra-la-ing wasn't doing it for me. SO TWEE. Yes, I have a twee threshold, who knew?

The most absurd song on that list was by far Arctic Monkey's You Look Good On The Dance Floor. Did they just not understand their own theme?

Let Down was my number one pick. Also my favs Radiohead song. Art Brut deserved a shoutout on there, even if anthemic indie songs are their gimmick... And you will all shoot me for this, but I thought some LeTigre needed to be on there... maybe it's just the remnants of riot grrrrl left in me... Beta Band Dry the Rain And you'll hurt me again for this one, but the peoples LOVE 16 Military Wives.

Also, if this list were solely for twenty-something girls with their noses pierced, Feist's Mushaboom.

Violent Femmes: American Music. I could do this ALL DAY.

. . . or possibly Don't Start Me On the Liquor, from the same album, I think. Another subject for another day - Violent Femmes' underrated musical career after their debut.

With you on Beta Band, maybe on 16 Military Wives. Don't really hear it on Mushaboom - a cute song, but an anthem?

Also, the true Killers anthem that I didn't see on that list is "All These Things That I've Done." As Sparky can attest, I am unnaturally obsessed that song.

Mushaboom- I promise it's an anthem, but only if you used to play with My Little Ponies and Transformers at the same time. Otherwise, not so much.

I'd put Wake Up from the Arcade Fire before I put Rebellion on there. I could do both.

It's unnatural to be obsessed with anything Killers.

I grew up praying at the altar of Gordon Gano. The first time I went to sleepaway camp when I was seven or so, my counselor had The Blind Leading the Naked. It was the first tape I ever saved up and bought, and it remains one of my favorite albums to this day.

Wait, how is there no Bowie on there?!?!?!?!?! And, in a gesture of magnanimity, I'll put Ledge on there.

Can Bowie be called "indie rock?" If that's the definition of this list, then I'd say he's out.

Heard Violent Femmes' "Hallowed Ground?" Quite good, and so is "3" - and there is good stuff on "New Times" (that's the one with Don't Start Me On The Liquor - a gem and a half, I swear).

The Killers suck, but not as bad as it sometimes seems. They are much less talented than they need to be to pull off the sound they want, but in a certain angle and a certain light it all comes together. And they've got that one song that floats my boat in a ridiculous number of ways.

Off to lunch.
